Purpose
The goal of the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen initiative, which is supported by The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. and its member Leagues, is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues.
Program Elements to Date
Inspired by the Junior League of Calgary's Junior Chefs program, the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen initiative began in 2006 with the goal of engaging kids in the preparation of healthy meals as a means to educate them and their parents regarding nutrition and healthy choices. The Junior League of Flint along with Junior Leagues in more than 200 locations provide lessons and demonstrations related to preparation of healthy meals and snacks in partnership with local community organizations, chefs and nutritionists.
The Association of Junior Leagues International provides guidelines and materials to support the success of these educational and motivational activities and supports the program with a website,www.kidsinthekitchen.org. The website includes bilingual recipes, tips on nutrition, fitness and healthy lifestyles as well as an interactive “Kids' Corner” with an online nutrition game provided by Kids in the Kitchen international sponsor, Cartoon Network.
League Participation
The Junior League of Flint has been participating in Kids in the Kitchen since its inception. Over 200 Leagues in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States conducted the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen programs in their communities each year since the program's inception.
At the close of the 2009-2010 year the JLF membership voted to embark on the development of a Strategic Plan which will guide us over the next 5 years.
The Strategic Planning Committee has been hard at work since June 2010 to redefine our focus and shape the vision of impact that the League will have with in our community.
As a membership our mission will focus on Domestic Violence. At the present time we are working with partners, like the YWCA who are already doing so much to stand-up against Domestic Violence with in Genesee County.
Information on how you can partner with us to increase awareness and opportunities for funding this cause will be along shortly.
Purpose
Done-In-A-Day provides a quick response or short term project support for Junior League communities. The Junior League of Flint (JLF) provides volunteer support for community projects that can be accomplished in a one-time evening or weekend effort.
When nonprofit agencies are in need and are low in resources, the JLF is proud to serve. This program provides a way for the JLF to give back immediately to our community for a worthy cause. All projects meet a community need within Genesee County.
Like to request volunteers for a Done-In-A-Day? Organizations are encouraged to make requests throughout the year. Please email us your request. jl_of_flint@yahoo.com
